Please check out our Lost and Found page. HOME Animals know no boundaries. Their needs are the same wherever they live. IMPORTANT!!!!!! PLEASE DO NOT THROW SCRAPS OF FOOD TO THE ANIMALS AT THE SHELTER. ONE OF THE DOGS GOT A BONE AND WAS VERY SICK. WE APPRECIATE THAT PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO BE KIND TO THE ANIMALS BUT SCRAPS, PARTICULARLY BONES, CAN MAKE THEM VERY ILL. ******************************************************************************************************************************* CAN YOU HELP? Christy has suggested we put a float in the Rum Runners parade in Crowsnest Pass on July 19. Her dad will provide a truck and trailer. Could you help to decorate the float on July 17/18? Christy would really appreciate your help!!! If you can spare some time, call Christy on 627 5191. STOLEN!!!!
This dog was brought to the shelter by the bylaw officer on 30 April. She was the responsibility of bylaw enforcement because she was picked up at Canyon School. Some time overnight she was stolen from the shelter. A gate was damaged in the process. The matter is now in the hands of the RCMP because this was theft and criminal damage to property as well as trespass. The Board of Directors will not tolerate such actions and will press charges against anyone entering the shelter without permission and removing an animal. If you know this dog or its whereabouts please contact the RCMP or the shelter. Thank you. ################################################################################################ GRACE At the Shelter we have to deal with some horrific cases. The worst to date is Grace. On April 3 an RCMP officer arrived with a dog she had found by the highway that was in very bad shape. She had a huge sore on her back. She went straight to the vet and Dr Erin Zachar treated her. When Erin shaved her she found numerous abscesses. Grace had been badly injured some time ago, perhaps by an eagle. She is about five years old. Not only that but she had had a broken leg in the past that hadn't been treated. She had a growth on her eye which Erin removed. Grace was extremely malnourished - she was about 12 lbs underweight and her ribs were protruding. Erin inserted eight drains in her sides and back. Grace endured all this with only a mild sedative. When I saw her I was horrified that anyone could allow an animal to be neglected so badly. Would it have been kinder to have her put down? As I was thinking this Grace looked at me and wagged her tail. I knew we couldn't care for her properly at the shelter. Erin agreed to keep her overnight so I, and other people, got on the phone. Who would take her until she got better? I had dealt with a wonderful lady from Okotoks Pound Rescue in the past and she immediately agreed to care for Grace. On April 4 we took her to Okotoks along with all her medications and handed her over. Grace was stoic throughout and although she must have been very uncomfortable and in pain, she never made a sound, just looked at us with her big brown eyes as if to say "thank you". Grace is lucky. A kind-hearted person picked her up, another spent hours repairing the damage and another agreed to care for her. Thank you to all the people who showed kindness to Grace. She will be placed in foster care then go to her forever home, no longer having to worry about dangers or where her next meal will come from. These pictures are a bit shocking.
Grace after her treatment Grace leaving the vet's
Grace eating a bone at the SPCA Grace settled well in Okotoks. Our first estimation of her age was way out - she is about ten years old. She has arthritis and may be diabetic. Her drains have been removed and she is happy in Okotoks. Her carer says she is a most gentle dog and is a pleasure to have around. She will recieve the best of care - the least we can do after what she has been through. Watch this space for updates - Grace will be a lovely dog!!!!

There are many "Happy Endings" at the SPCA shelter but the volunteers have to deal with some heartbreaking situations. Here are two such cases that occurred on consecutive days. ABANDONED
This dog was found on September 3 (Labour Day) tied to the fence of the Town Yard near the shelter. He was in full sun without food, water or shade. He was wearing a choke collar and could easily have strangled himself. He was very frightened (see how his tail is between his legs) and demonstrated this by appearing to be aggressive. When anyone approached he growled and raised his hackles. I spoke to him gently and eventually he let me get close enough to give him food and water. I sat on the ground near him, talking to him and gradually gained his confidence. He licked my hand and let me stroke him. We sat for some time then he let me untie his leash and I took him to the shelter. He is very friendly and gentle although still wary of sudden noises or movements - NOT SURPRISING, EH? This was a cowardly act of cruelty to abandon this dog in such a way. For those people who do not have the courage to hand in their animal (and for the kind people who may rescue an animal while the shelter is unattended) there is a cage outside the office which provides shelter.
This poor dog was found on Schofield Street in an appalling condition. She was emaciated and absolutely covered with fleas and flea eggs. She was in such distress that she was bleeding from flea bites and from scratching herself. She was picked up by a volunteer and brought to the shelter where she was fed and bathed and treated for fleas. She is a very gentle creature and not very old although she appears to have had puppies in the past. We believe she was abandoned in town.
A huge thank you to Wal*Mart who presented the Pincher Creek Humane Society/SPCA with a cheque for $4,000 at their Grand Opening in Pincher Creek on January 24th, 2007. This wonderful gesture is greatly appreciated by everyone connected with our shelter - and, of course, by the animals it will go towards helping find a better life. Half of this money will go towards essential repairs to the building and the rest will go towards the refunds for spay/neuter of animals adopted from the shelter.
Thank you to Lundbreck Furniture Store who donated a new bar fridge to the shelter. A fridge is essential for keeping food fresh and for medications.

We are a volunteer, non-profit organization located in Pincher Creek, Alberta. We are a member of the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.). Our mission is to find loving homes and ensure a safe environment for lost, unwanted or abused animals. Our main goal is to ensure that physical and emotional needs are met for all of our animals. Our shelter for homeless cats, dogs and other small pets is a no-kill* facility. We strive to find loving homes for all of our four legged friends! *Unfortunately there are rare occasions when it is necessary to euthanise an animal. This only occurs after all avenues have been explored. Cases when this is necessary are if an animal is sick or injured beyond veterinary help or proves to be unadoptable due to excessive aggressive behaviour, either towards people or other animals. Euthanisation is carried out upon consultation with and by a qualified veterinarian and the decision is never taken lightly.
Our MissionIt is the aim of the Pincher Creek Humane Society to place all animals that come into our care in suitable homes where they will be well looked after and happy. |
